A Connected University: The Origins and Development of the University of Gloucestershire

In one sense, the University of Gloucestershire came into existence on 18 October 2001 when the Privy Council approved the use of that title by the Cheltenham & Gloucester College of Higher Education. But to consider that date alone as the ‘foundation’ would be an incredible disservice to the many individuals and institutions which went into creating that institution, including most substantially the foundation of the Cheltenham Training College in the 1840s. This talk will consider the University’s development over a period now starting to approach two centuries, the different tributaries which have formed it, and place these developments in the context of the broader development of the higher education sector.
